Postby Altoidmatt » Mon Jul 26, 2010 7:16 am

I've seen plenty of yellow stone flies around on local streams and I've even seen them on the frankstown branch, why aren't they on the J? I've been fishing other waters since the temps went up, Everytime I run into them a tie on a big BHPT (thanks to some advice from this forum)and It works great!

Altoidmatt,
There are plenty of Perlas or large golden stones on the lower "j". (Allison stretch especially) Unfortunately nearly all their activity, emergence, courting, egg laying etc. is after dark. I have fished my Golden Stone foam patterns tied for western streams as indicator flies anytime I suspect stones are active, or I see them. Occasionally trout seem to remember what they were eating the night before by taking a wack at my indicator.

Bill, Where is the Allison strech? Do you consider the lower section below the gorge?, I rarely go below baree only because of the extra drive but with this weeks weather looking so nice I may have to. Just curious have you ever seen stone flies in the tyrone/pemberton area?

Matt,
We have early black stone flies in the upper river and a few yellow sallies around Pemberton, but I have not seen Perlas above Spruce Creek. Although, they are present throughout Spruce Creek. The Allyson farm is upstream from the 305 bridge. We call his stretch above the trestle the "Cornfield hole". Note: It looks like we will soon have a public fishing easement in place on this stretch.

Bill,
Thats great news, my buddy that works for the pfbc showed me information on "easement" I noticed the LJRA is a contributor to the funds for this process. A job well done.

Matt,
The LJRA initiated the Public Fishing Easement Program program with PFBC two years ago. It was patterned after the steelhead program in Erie. We did not contribute funds so much as we created the funds while working with PFBC who found some bucks in a "fine" fund. Then LJRA, using its tax exempt status, applied for a grant from DCNR for $100,000 in matching funds. To date the LJRA has made first contact with all landowners and then the PFBC has done a good job following through. The newsrelease was a little missleading, although they did at least mention our role, while making it sound like 100% PFBC. I guess that's their job.... to blow their own horn.
